Restylane contains hyaluronic acid (HA) – a natural tissue substance that normally lives next to collagen. Under-eye circles, creases, lines, and depressions of the face are caused by the loss of volume due to aging. By age 50, the level of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the body declines by as much as half. It is responsible for providing the skin’s plumpness and for retaining its moisture. With Restylane products, the skin can be smoothed and lost volume replaced. Hyaluronic acid fillers will last 6-9 months.
The most common areas treated with Restylane are under the eyes to minimize the appearance of bags, in the cheeks, in the nasolabial folds (smile lines), and to plump the lips or creases and lines around the mouth. They are uniquely well suited for injection under thin skin of the eyes and for lip enhancement, where no other filler can do the job. Another unique property of HA fillers is their reversibility with a simple enzyme injection. This can be done if over-injection or irregularity occurs.
Treatment is performed as a brief office procedure. After anesthetizing the area with local anesthetic, a tiny canula is used to inject the clear HA gel under the skin. Some products come premixed with local anesthetic adding to better tolerance of injections. Mild discomfort may be experienced.
Side effects are swelling and bruising which are usually minimal. If bruising occurs, special cover-up makeup can be used. Lip injections even if minimal will result in significantly swollen lips for 48 hours. The areas of injection are tender for 2 – 3 days.
