Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week

Doctor examining a patient's nose for rhinoplasty in Newport Beach, CA

Rhinoplasty can refine the shape, size, and balance of the nose while improving overall facial harmony. While results can be life-changing, it’s important to be well-prepared for the recovery period that comes first. While every patient heals at their own pace, most rhinoplasty recoveries follow a general week-by-week timeline.

At Appearance Center of Newport Beach, rhinoplasty recovery is guided by a team of board-certified facial plastic surgeons, dermatologists, physician assistants, and aesthetic nurses who combine medical expertise with natural artistry and genuine compassion. With care performed in a state-of-the-art medical clinic and Joint Commission–accredited surgery center, patients can feel supported by a personalized, safety-focused experience from consultation through healing.

Week 1: Rest, Swelling, and Early Healing

The first week after rhinoplasty is usually the most noticeable stage of recovery. You can expect swelling, bruising around the eyes, nasal congestion, mild discomfort, and pressure. Clear nasal drainage and dripping occurs for the first 3 days. A splint is often placed on the nose to protect the new shape as the tissues begin to heal.

During this time, it is important to rest with your head elevated, avoid bending or heavy lifting, and follow all aftercare instructions from your surgeon. Most patients focus on quiet recovery at home during the first several days. To accelerate resolution of bruising, our PA’s can treat your bruising with Vbeam pulse dye laser. Usually, 2 to 3 daily treatments can resolve the bruising.

Week 2: Returning to Daily Activities

By the second week, bruising typically improves significantly, and by 10 days it naturally resolves. After one week, many patients feel comfortable returning to work, school, or light daily routines. Swelling will still be present, but it is usually less obvious to others.

When your splint is removed near the end of the first week, you start to see the early shape of your new nose. However, the nose will still look puffy, especially around the tip.

Weeks 3 to 4: Feeling More Like Yourself

During weeks three and four, most patients notice continued improvement in swelling and comfort. Exercise may be allowed, depending on your surgeon’s guidance. You should still avoid contact sports, strenuous workouts, or anything that could bump the nose.

Although your nose may look more refined, internal healing is still taking place. Patience is key during this stage.

Months 2 to 3: More Definition Appears

By two to three months, much of the swelling has subsided, and the nose begins to look more natural. Breathing may also continue to improve if functional concerns are addressed. The bridge often settles sooner, while the nasal tip may remain slightly swollen. Around 3 months, your surgeon may inject the tip with a steroid to dissolve the scar tissue faster and refine the shape of the nose.

Months 6 to 12: Final Results

Rhinoplasty results continue to refine gradually over several months. Most patients enjoy their final results within 12 months, although subtle changes in the nasal tip can take longer to appear. Following your surgeon’s instructions and attending follow-up visits can help support a smooth recovery and beautiful, lasting results.
