Sculptra is a unique, long-lasting injectable that promotes the body’s collagen production in the face. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Voluma and Juvederm, Sculptra is designed to restore volume loss over a period of between 1 to 6 months. The gradual effects can extend up to two years. At The Appearance Center of Newport Beach, our talented surgeons are proud to offer the benefits of Sculptra.

Aging at the Cellular Level
With age, you can anticipate an overall loss of volume or fat in the face and less elasticity in the skin. These changes are caused by a decrease in the body’s collagen production. The lack of collagen production diminishes the youthful shape of your face and neck, often causing wrinkles, depressions, and shadowing in places that make you look older than you feel. It is possible to have several unsightly areas, including:
- Sunken areas under the eyes
- Diminished cheek appearances
- Hollows at the temples
Most commonly, patients will seek the help of our board certified surgeons, requesting information on volume rejuvenation with fillers such as Voluma, Juvederm, or Restylane. These fillers work wonders, but many patients can benefit from something more long term–an injectable that corrects the body’s collagen deficiency. Appearance Center surgeons have found that Sculptra in conjunction with hyaluronic acid fillers creates an immediate and long-lasting result for patients seeking a non-surgical alternative to a facial rejuvenation.
Volumizing the Skin
As collagen begins to build in the face, hollowed or shadowy features will suddenly appear more full and brighter as light reflects off of your improved and rejuvenated facial contours. Some of the most common areas you will see improvement are:
- Jaw line length
Patience With Sculptra
Sculptra is unique because it works in conjunction with your body. This takes time. Your skin will slowly but surely develop volume by rebuilding collagen. Over the course of a few months, you'll notice subtle changes, such as:
- Tighter skin
- Rounded facial features
- Fewer wrinkles
The effects are worth the wait. Because the effects take time to develop, they also remain in place for longer than traditional filler treatments. Where some fillers wear off in 6 months to a year, you can enjoy Sculptra's effects for about two years. This astounding time period makes this injectable filler a popular choice.
Sculptra Versus Other Fillers
Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid injected into the deeper layers of your skin. The synthetic material does not harm the body and is slowly broken down over 2-3 years. Once injected into the face, Sculptra micro-particles stimulate the production of collagen. Sculptra does not add volume to your face because it merely stimulates your body to perform the process. When injected alone, Sculptra creates a dramatic change over several months avoiding sudden transformations that may be objectionable to some patients. For immediate and long-term results, our surgeons recommend a dual treatment option that incorporates filler. Sculptra is a cost-effective treatment for volume rejuvenation due to the long duration of its effect.
Sculptra can be injected for deeper augmentation in more areas of the face than other fillers. It can correct volume loss in the cheeks, entire jawline, and temples. It cannot be injected for superficial line treatment as typically treated with filler. Although larger volume correction over more parts of the face achieves the most balanced rejuvenation, targeted small areas can also be treated. It is applied and injected similarly to fat transfer to the face.
The Treatment Process
Treatment is performed over 1–2 office sessions. For more extensive correction, a third session may be required. Each treatment session is spaced 4–6 weeks apart. This allows your doctor to evaluate the effect of the previous injection in order to fine tune the desired result. A patient is treated with 2–6 vials of Sculptra using 2–3 vials per session. Some patients with significant fat atrophy could benefit from as many as 8 vials.
After injecting local anesthesia in the areas of treatment, Sculptra, pre-mixed with additional local anesthetic, is injected with small cannulas. Any mild discomfort quickly dissipates as the areas of injection become numb.
Sculptra injections are mostly water used for suspending the micro-particles for even distribution in the face. Immediately after injection, the face is very swollen. The next day, the water is absorbed leaving a little swelling. Within a couple of days, the face returns to normal with no improvement. As collagen is generated, the first sign of results can be seen at 4-6 weeks. Most of the effect is reached by 6 months. Re-injection is considered between 2 and 2 1/2 years later and usually requires less than the initial treatment.
