Submentoplasty

A Surgical Solution for a More Defined Neck Line

There are many Appearance Center patients that come to us with a fair amount of stubborn weight in the chin and neck area. Unlike patients who have laxity in the skin of the neck, and who are prime candidates for a face and neck lift, these patients are usually in their earlier years without a lot of excess skin to spare. They are young, and beautiful, and vibrant, but will typically have what is referred to as an “obtuse” neck line, simply meaning the area beneath the chin and into the neck follows a straighter line, and is not as curvaceous or contoured as they would like. Appearance Center board certified facial plastic surgeons typically consider these patients to be ideal candidates for submentoplasty. Patients who undergo submentoplasty can look forward to the following results:

  • A reduction of fat under the chin and in the neckline
  • A smoother, more sleek and attractive neck line
  • An anatomically balanced profile in the area of the chin and neck

Combining Submentoplasty with Additional Procedures

A submentoplasty may be recommended on its own to help define the facial profile, and create a beautiful and prominent neck line, and it may be recommended in combination with additional treatments. If the combination of surgical treatments is recommended to you, you can look forward to your surgical results being more closely aligned with your esthetic vision. Frequent combinations of surgical treatments with submentoplasty include:

  • Submentoplasty with neck lift – for patients with laxity in the skin of the neck
  • Submentoplasty with chin implant – for a beautifully balanced and defined profile
  • Submentoplasty with nonsurgical facial volume enhancement – for improved contouring of the face and profile

*Individual results may vary.

FAQs About Submentoplasty

A submentoplasty differs from a neck lift in that it is a much less invasive procedure that focuses specifically on the chin and upper neck area. Rather than removing excess skin, the submentoplasty removes excess fat deposits beneath the chin that are not reached by weight loss.

During submentoplasty, a small incision is made under the chin, the central neck muscles are tightened and vertical bands in the neck are released. This creates a sharper cervico-mental (submental-neck) angle. Simultaneous liposuction of the neck is often performed to further define the neck lines.

A snug dressing is applied to the neck for 3 days. Bruising and swelling can last 7-10 days. Sutures will be removed at one week. You may experience tightness, firming, and itching for 3 – 4 weeks of healing.
