Call Us Today:

The Appearance Center of Newport Beach is home to one of the most talented teams of Board Certified Surgeons in Orange County. Our surgeons specialize in performing a variety of cosmetic procedures aimed to improve signs of aging in the face. The surgical procedure for improving the shape of the eyes, brow, and hairline is called a brow lift or forehead lift.

Brow Lift Overview

A low, heavy brow or deep horizontal creases in the forehead can create a tired, angry, or sad appearance. A brow lift is used to help restore the youthful appearance of the upper face. A brow lift may also be a better option for correction of upper eyelid hooding, a common term for excess skin in the eyelids. In some cases, brow lift and eyelid surgeries are given together in order to reach the best rejuvenative results.

Elevation of drooping brows, smoothing of forehead lines, improvement of upper eyelid hooding, and smoothing of crow’s feet are some of the expected results from a brow lift procedure.

At your cosmetic consultation, your board certified surgeon will review the areas of the eyes and forehead you wish to address and determine the best course of action for your surgical plan. The brow lift procedure will generally involve three to five small scalp incisions hidden in the hairline. Our surgeons will create these incisions without having to shave the hair.

A brow lift is performed at our Joint Commission accredited ambulatory surgery center under anesthesia, and is frequently done along with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as blepharoplasty and a face lift. Pretreatment with Botox may be recommended in order to decrease movement of the forehead during healing.

After surgery, there can be a mild to moderate headache. Swelling and bruising can last 7-10 days.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for a Brow Lift?

The only sure way to determine if you are a candidate for a brow lift is to discuss the idea with your Board Certified Ophthalmic or Facial Plastic Surgeon. Descent of the eyebrows is a normal part of the aging process. It becomes evident as patients approach their late 30s and early 40s. You may have noticed some recent changes in the shape of your brow, but surgery is not the only option for improving this area. Your surgeon will be able to identify the right solution for you at your cosmetic consultation.

Common Complaints

Some of the most common complaints we hear from patients considering a brow lift are:

  • Forehead wrinkles.
  • Droopy lateral brow.
  • Drooping of the medial brow with wrinkles in between them.
  • Sagging upper eyelids with excess skin and/or fat.

At Home Evaluation:

An at home way to tell if you are ready for a brow lift consultation is to look in the mirror and try to identify any changes you have recently seen in the appearance of your eyelids and forehead. It is helpful to divide the forehead region into four separate parts.

  • Forehead
  • Upper eyelid
  • Medial (inside) brow
  • Lateral (outside) brow

Evaluate each one of these areas and take note of where you would like to see improvement. You may also wish to place your fingers approximately one inch above the outer portion of your eyebrows and elevate both sides simultaneously. Is this the look you are hoping to achieve? If the answer is yes, you may be a candidate for surgery and should definitely consult with one of our surgeons.

Here are some additional indicators that you may be a suitable candidate for a brow lift:

  • Your eyebrows appear too close to your upper eyelids.
  • Your eyebrows have started to descend below the eye socket rim.
  • It takes effort to wrinkle your forehead or elevate your eyebrows.
  • The outer portion of your eyebrow is at the same level as the remainder of your eyebrow.

If you have noticed any of the above changes, call us. Our friendly staff will walk you through the scheduling of your consultation and your surgeon will discuss in more detail the most appropriate treatment plan for your desired results.

Types of Brow Lift

There are different techniques a surgeon may use when performing your brow lift surgery. You may have heard of some of them.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

One of the main advantages of an endoscopic brow lift is that the surgeon only needs to make a few small incisions in order to elevate the brow. In addition, when patients undergo an endoscopic brow lift, the muscle that once caused wrinkles between the eyebrows can be removed. This will significantly improve the appearance of these wrinkles permanently.

Short-Scar Brow Lift

The short-scar brow lift is a very common cosmetic procedure. Two small incisions are made on both sides of the hairline or within the hair-bearing scalp. A hairline incision has the advantage of lowering patient's hairline slightly, whereas a scalp incision is undetectable.

Coronal Brow Lift

Considered to be the most aggressive type of brow lift, a coronal brow lift incision extends across the entire scalp. This is highly effective in correcting severe brow drooping, particularly of the medial brow. One disadvantage of a coronal brow lift is the size of the incision, which requires a longer recovery period. Another possible complication is the loss of sensation in the posterior scalp region.

Temporal Brow Lift

A temporal brow lift is highly effective in rejuvenating the upper portion of the face. Not only does it lift the outer corner of the eyes, but it also dramatically improves hooding of the upper eyelid, which makes patients look tired or sad. By raising the outer corner of the eyebrows, we achieve an elegant, slightly arched appearance that helps to brighten the eye area. Finally, a temple lift is an excellent way to remove crow's feet that are a direct result of excess skin.
