Understanding the Mini-Facelift

A mini-facelift is a surgical procedure used to tighten loose skin and muscle in the lower face. The procedure addresses the common signs of aging found in the midface,  jowls, and nasolabial folds. Patients who seek out the mini-facelift are generally in their mid 40s to late 50s and need just a little lift in the cheek and jawline area.

The mini-facelift does not address the forehead or brows and does not address the loose skin in the neck, also called the wattle. Those areas are improved with a brow lift and a neck lift. A regular face-lift is the combination of the mini-facelift and a neck lift.

The Aging Face

As the body ages, skin loses elasticity, collagen and resilience, while fat and muscle in the face simultaneously lessen. As a result, the skin can form wrinkles, and facial features may start to look as though they have lost their youthful buoyancy. A mini-facelift can help solve these issues by tightening the skin and muscle in the lower part of the face.

The Orange County Cosmetic Surgery Consultation

If you think you might be a candidate for a mini-facelift, we recommend scheduling a cosmetic consultation. Our patient care coordinator will take wonderful care of you as she walks you through the entire process.

Your cosmetic consultation will begin by explaining your main areas of concern. It is helpful to spend some time beforehand looking at your face in detail in order to determine where you would like to see improvement. Once you have been able to explain your concerns, an Orange County plastic surgeon will take the time to educate you on the different options available to address your facial rejuvenation needs.

Commonly, patients choose to combine the mini-facelift with another procedure or minimally invasive option such as filler and Botox which together will enhance volume and decrease wrinkling. Patients also commonly combine the mini-facelift with laser treatments which tighten the skin further and even out skin tone. These options can be discussed as part of a full facial rejuvenation plan during your consultation.

During the Mini-Facelift

The mini-facelift differs from the traditional facelift in several ways. There are fewer incision points in a mini-facelift. The incisions are smaller, and the recovery time for a mini-facelift is shorter. The incisions made during a mini-facelift are well hidden. They will be around the hairline near and behind the ears. Your board certified Newport Beach cosmetic surgeon will do an excellent job of finely stitching incisions in order to conceal and reduce visibility.

Anesthesia and Recovery Times

Patients are put under anesthesia by a board certified anesthesiologist during the mini-facelift procedure. This way the patient is flexible and relaxed as doctors manipulate the skin and tissues in the face. Patients should expect about a two-week recovery period as swelling decreases and incisions heal.

One of the best parts of the mini-facelift procedure are the immediate results. After a few days of recovery, any bruising or swelling will give way to smooth and tight skin. Patients can begin to resume daily activities within a very short period of time, thoroughly enjoying the benefits of a more rejuvenated look.
