Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is used to permanently correct the appearance of the eyes.  Eyelid surgery will most commonly remove excess skin and reposition fat or muscles around the orbital structure to achieve a symmetrical and youthful look. Contact our Orange County clinic if you believe you’re a candidate for this procedure.

A Permanent Solution For Refreshed and Refined Eyelids

Patients seeking to alter the appearance of their eyes for age related or esthetic reasons often find that eyelid surgery is the most effective and long-lasting solution. While there are several options for nonsurgical eyelid rejuvenation, eyelid surgery will precisely and carefully reposition the delicate skin and muscle tissue around the orbital structure to permanently achieve a refreshed, rejuvenated, and refined appearance.

There are several reasons Appearance Center patients seek out our cosmetic eyelid specialists. The most common are listed below.

Reduce Signs of Aging in the Upper and Lower Eyelid

Signs of aging in the upper and lower eyelid stem from two key factors: the body's tendency to produce less collagen and elastin in the skin, and the body's tendency to lose or displace fat as we age.

In the upper eyelid, aging is marked by a heavy brow and sagging or looseness in the skin above the lash line. In extreme cases upper eyelid skin can droop over the lash line. This is referred to as "hooding."

In the lower eyelid, aging is marked by moderate to severe wrinkling, excess skin, hollowing and heaviness beneath the eye. Hollowing and heaviness often create what is commonly referred to as "eye bags."

Appearance Center eyelid surgeons can help patients rejuvenate their tired and aging eyelids, safely, and with great finesse and attention to detail. This level of expertise is imperative when surgically altering this very delicate and sensitive area of the face.

Procedures recommended for surgical eyelid rejuvenation include one or more of the following:

  • Upper Blepharoplasty - reducing signs on sagging in the upper eyelid, refining the shape of the eyelid.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty - removing eye bags, reducing eyelid wrinkles, and repositioning or replacing the body's natural fat loss to lessen the appearance of hollow or aging eyes.
  • Quad Blepharoplasty - addressing the eyelids with both upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty.
  • Brow Lift (Forehead Lift) - addressing aging in the upper eyelid by altering the support structure of the eyebrow.
  • Nonsurgical Treatments - combining treatments, such as Botox, filler, laser treatments, and chemical peels to enhance the rejuvenative results of the surgical procedure.

Alter the Overall Appearance of the Eyelids

Many Appearance Center patients seek out our eyelid specialists for non-age related eyelid surgery. These are patients who wish to alter or modify the shape of their eyelids for purely esthetic reasons. This may include:

  • adjusting the shape of the eyelids to appear more almond shaped or "cat-like"
  • adding a crease to the upper eyelid where there was not one before

The latter surgical option is sometimes referred to as "Asian Blepharosplasty," and has become very popular in recent years.

Whether your cosmetic goals are to alter the shape the eyelid or to restore the original form and functionality of the eyelid, Appearance Center eyelid specialists are here for you. We will help you achieve more rested, rejuvenated, and refined eyelids safely and with an unsurpassed level of talent, skill, and expertise.

Combining Eyelid Surgery with Additional Procedures

Appearance Center cosmetic surgeons specialize in creating a balanced, symmetrical, and youthfully rejuvenated look. In many instances, a combination of surgical procedures will be recommended, so that the patient can benefit from a fully restorative, long-lasting, and revivified appearance.

Some of the most common treatment combinations including eyelid surgery are:

  • Eyelid surgery with brow lift - for enhanced support of the upper lid, and a brighter more relaxed appearance
  • Eyelid surgery with nonsurgical eyelid rejuvenation - for the final touch necessary to create beautiful, balanced, and age-appropriate eyelids
  • Eyelid surgery with nonsurgical facial volume enhancement - for a completely refreshed and rejuvenated look
  • Eyelid surgery with facelift - for a brighter more vibrant version of yourself

Appearance Center eyelid surgeons will customize a treatment plan specific to your individual facial anatomy and treatment goals, so that you can feel confident in your refreshed and reinvigorated appearance.

Determining Whether You Are a Good Candidate for an Eyelid Consultation

Patients who inquire about eyelid surgery, typically feel they would like to change or improve upon one or more of the following physical characteristics:

  • Heavy or sagging upper eyelids
  • Hollowing or bagging in the lower eyelids
  • A heavy or sagging brow or forehead
  • A lack of creasing in the upper eyelid

If you are experiencing one or more of these physical characteristics, you are a candidate for an eyelid surgery consultation. Appearance Center cosmetic surgeons will create a customized rejuvenation plan at any stage of the aging process, only recommending the most appropriate treatment plan for a brighter, more youthful appearance.

FAQs About Eyelid Surgery

After surgical eyelid rejuvenation, patients can expect to experience mild to moderate bruising and swelling. This will typically last for one to two weeks. Temporary effects may include dryness or itchiness of the eyes for up to 1 week. If necessary, some sutures used may need to be removed 5-7 days after the procedure.

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is an elective procedure. Insurance does not cover elective surgery. In some instances, though, eyelid surgery can serve a functional purpose. These are in extreme cases of eyelid hooding, where the eyelids are physically blocking or impairing vision. There are specific medical steps to complete to see whether a patient is a candidate for partial insurance coverage. For more information speak with one of our eyelid surgeons at an individualized consultation.

Yes. Appearance Center surgeons are extremely skilled in both eyelid reconstruction and eyelid revision surgery. In fact, a large portion of their patients are referred from other physicians in the local Orange County area who trust that our surgeons will handle the most complicated cases of eyelid treatment with great finesse and consideration.

There are a few scenarios that our specialists will see in regards to revision eyelid surgery. The two most common are patients who had an eyelid surgery several years prior, and patients who are dissatisfied with a recent eyelid surgery.

Since we never stop aging, patients who had surgery several years prior, are typically simply ready for additional upkeep and maintenance.

For Patients who have had a surgery they are dissatisfied with, they are in particular need of a specialist who can provide them with the best treatment possible. There are several factors that our surgeons must consider when creating a customized plan for correction of a previous surgery. For these patients, it is imperative to find an eyelid specialist with experience, skill, and knowledge of the anatomy of the eyelid.
